History, Trends & Expert Care at Altus

Chiropractic care has a rich history and a strong presence in Abbotsford, British Columbia. This hands-on therapy, focused on the spine and musculoskeletal system, has evolved over more than a century from its early origins into a mainstream healthcare option. In this article, we explore the history of chiropractic care and its development in Canada (especially B.C.), examine key statistics and trends in Abbotsford’s chiropractic scene, outline the regulations and governing bodies ensuring quality care, and explain why Altus is a top choice for chiropractic treatment in Abbotsford. Read on to learn how chiropractic began, how it’s helping patients today, and what to expect from trusted providers like Altus.

History of Chiropractic Care in Canada and B.C.

Chiropractic care traces its modern origins to 1895, when Daniel David Palmer – a Canadian-born teacher and healer – performed the first chiropractic adjustment in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer’s spinal adjustment reportedly restored a man’s hearing, demonstrating the potential of this new therapy. He soon founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897, training others in this drug-free, hands-on approach to healing. The practice quickly spread across North America; by the early 1900s, chiropractors were already treating patients in Canada and British Columbia. For example, Vancouver saw its first chiropractor in 1913, showing how rapidly the profession gained foothold in B.C.

As chiropractic care grew in popularity, practitioners pushed for formal recognition. In 1934, the provincial government of B.C. established the College of Chiropractors of British Columbia (CCBC) to regulate the profession. This was a milestone that helped standardize training and practice. Over the following decades, chiropractic became further integrated into Canadian healthcare. The first Canadian chiropractic college – the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto – opened in 1945, providing accredited education for chiropractors nationally. By the late 20th century, all provinces, including B.C., recognized chiropractic as a regulated health profession. Today, after more than a hundred years, chiropractic care has evolved into a holistic, evidence-based discipline. Modern chiropractors use not only spinal adjustments, but also exercise therapy, soft-tissue techniques, and lifestyle advice to support patients’ overall health. What began as D.D. Palmer’s manual spinal technique is now a well-established healthcare field in Canada. In British Columbia alone, over 1,000 licensed chiropractors practice across the province a testament to how the profession has flourished from its humble beginnings to a trusted part of mainstream care.

Chiropractic Care in Abbotsford: Statistics and Trends

Abbotsford enjoys robust access to chiropractic services, reflecting both local demand and wider trends in chiropractic care. Here are some key statistics and trends that highlight the impact and usage of chiropractic in Abbotsford and beyond:

  • Local Availability: Abbotsford (population ~141,500) is served by approximately 37 chiropractors in the city. This abundance of clinics means residents have convenient access to treatment. British Columbia overall has more than 1,000 chiropractors registered, ensuring plenty of choice for patients.
  • Growing Popularity: Canadians are increasingly turning to chiropractic for pain relief and wellness. Roughly 4.7 million Canadians visit a chiropractor each year – about 11–13% of the population on an annual basis. In fact, chiropractic is the most commonly used form of complementary health care in Canada. B.C. in particular has some of the highest usage rates, with residents of western provinces consulting chiropractors more often than the national average.
  • Patient Demographics: Chiropractic patients come from all age groups and backgrounds. Adults in their middle years (25 to 64) are the most likely to seek chiropractic care, but seniors and even children also benefit (in North America, about 2 million pediatric chiropractic visits occur each year). Notably, women utilize chiropractic slightly more than men – about 60% of patients are female – though people of all genders report positive outcomes. These demographics indicate that chiropractic appeals to a broad spectrum of the community, from active adults and athletes to families seeking natural healthcare.
  • High Success and Satisfaction: Chiropractic care boasts strong success rates and patient satisfaction. In surveys, approximately 77% of patients describe their chiropractic treatment as “very effective” for relieving their ailments. Likewise, around 83% of patients report being satisfied or very satisfied with the care they received. Such high satisfaction exceeds that of many other healthcare interventions, underscoring the effectiveness of chiropractic in managing issues like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and more. Many patients not only experience pain relief but also improved mobility and quality of life, contributing to chiropractic’s growing reputation.

These trends show that chiropractic care is a trusted and growing healthcare choice. With dozens of chiropractors in Abbotsford and a large portion of the population seeking drug-free, non-invasive treatment, it’s clear that chiropractic has become a mainstay of community health. Whether for chronic back pain, recovery from injury, or general wellness maintenance, more people are turning to chiropractors for safe and effective care – and they’re reporting excellent results.

Regulations and Governing Bodies in B.C. Chiropractic

Chiropractic in British Columbia is tightly regulated to ensure patient safety and professional excellence. Chiropractors are recognized as licensed healthcare professionals under B.C. law, which means they must meet stringent education and practice standards. Here’s an overview of how chiropractic care is governed and the qualifications required in B.C.:

  • Education & Licensing: To practice as a chiropractor in B.C., one must earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree from an accredited chiropractic college. This entails over 4,200 hours of training in anatomy, physiology, neurology, radiology, and hands-on adjusting techniques. (Canada has two accredited schools: CMCC in Toronto and one at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.) After graduating, candidates must pass national board exams and register with the provincial regulator. All chiropractors in B.C. are required to be licensed by the regulatory college before treating patients, ensuring they are fully qualified.
  • Regulatory Body: The primary regulator is the College of Chiropractors of British Columbia (CCBC), which was established in 1934 as one of the first chiropractic regulatory bodies in Canada. In June 2024, the CCBC amalgamated into the new College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC), joining forces with the regulatory colleges for massage therapy, naturopathy, and traditional Chinese medicine. This College (under the provincial Health Professions Act) sets standards of practice, licenses new chiropractors, and handles public complaints or discipline. It exists to protect patients and uphold high professional and ethical standards among chiropractors.
  • Professional Associations: In addition to the regulator, B.C. chiropractors are supported by the British Columbia Chiropractic Association (BCCA) – a voluntary professional organization that advocates for the profession and provides continuing education and public awareness. Many are also members of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA), which represents chiropractors at the national level. These bodies work alongside the regulator to promote evidence-based practice and integrate chiropractic within the broader healthcare system.
  • Practice Standards: Because chiropractic is a regulated profession, patients can have confidence in the consistency and safety of care. Chiropractors must adhere to a strict code of ethics and standards of practice. They are required to maintain up-to-date knowledge through continuing education every year, and their clinics may be subject to quality assurance inspections. In B.C., chiropractors are primary contact healthcare providers, meaning you do not need a doctor’s referral to seek treatment. They are trained to diagnose conditions within their scope and will refer to other specialists if needed. This collaborative approach, under a regulated framework, helps ensure that patients receive appropriate and effective care.

The bottom line is that in British Columbia, chiropractic care operates under a comprehensive regulatory system that protects the public. From the moment a chiropractor enters practice in Abbotsford, you can trust that they have undergone years of education and are accountable to a professional college. Regulation and oversight by bodies like the CCBC/CCHPBC mean that when you visit a chiropractor at Altus or any clinic, you’re in the hands of a licensed expert committed to your well-being. Additionally, many extended health insurance plans cover chiropractic treatments, and MSP (Medical Services Plan) offers partial coverage for eligible individuals – making regulated chiropractic care both safe and accessible for patients.
